Walk the streets any time of day or night and all of my neighbors who are mostly Mexican are as nice and welcoming as you could ever want.

You need to account for time spent. Being in the US 365 days is much different than being on a one to two week vacation in Mexico.

Feelings aren’t facts, so I looked into it tonight. I compared homicide numbers of US Citizens in the US vs Mexico.

According to Statista.com, there were 62.33 million US visitors to Mexico in 2021-2022. In your article you mention that 121 US Citizens were murdered udring that time, which means Americans had a .000194% chance of being murdered in Mexico during those 2 years.

I then looked up the FBI statistics for murders in the US. I could not find data for 2022. There were 22,000 in 2020 and 22,900 in 2021. This totals 44,900. According to census.gov, the total population of the US is 331,449,281. This means you had a 0.0135% chance of being murdered in the US during those 2 years.

This means that as a US citizen, you are roughly 70x more likely to be murdered in the United States than in Mexico. And if you don’t live in a Mexican border town, say you live somewhere like Ajijic, you are even safer: your chance of being murdered in Lake Chapala is 218x less likely.

It would seem that perception = reality afterall.
