But Morena, and Sheinbaum, are smart enough to take advantage of the fruits of capitalism, while working to see the proceeds go to all. In the little village near us, the brighter kids, poor but ambitious, are the key. If Mexico lifts them up, they will lift their families with them.

However, caution and good planning will be required to cope with a few downsides. For example, while the trade corridor and nearshoring opportunities may boost the national economy, there’s a risk that the benefits will disproportionately favor richer individuals and regions.

Wealthier investors and corporations are likely to reap substantial rewards, while poorer populations might see limited direct benefits.

Despite the optimism, Mexico still faces significant infrastructure deficits. Developing high-quality infrastructure is crucial for sustaining economic growth, but it requires substantial investment and efficient implementation.

Rapid industrialization and foreign investment could lead to social displacement and environmental concerns. Poorer communities might face challenges such as inadequate housing, pollution, and loss of traditional livelihoods. While the current geopolitical and economic conditions favor nearshoring, they can also change rapidly. Mexico’s economy might be vulnerable to shifts in global trade policies, especially concerning the U.S.-China relationship. And of course, Mexico desperately relies on the USA as its main trade partner.

Although Mexico has a relatively well-educated population compared to other developing countries, there remains a need for ongoing investment in education and workforce training to ensure that the local labor market can meet the demands of advanced industries.

It’s also worth pointing out that all this will for sure benefit the already wealthy as well, we hope, poorer communities. Wealthier individuals and corporations can invest in burgeoning sectors and infrastructure projects, potentially yielding high returns. Improved infrastructure and favorable trade conditions create a more conducive environment for business operations, benefiting large enterprises.

Proximity to the U.S. and improved trade routes can enhance export opportunities, directly benefiting businesses with the capital to engage in international trade.

In the article, Jeffreys’ optimistic outlook highlights a potentially transformative period for Mexico’s economy, driven by nearshoring and infrastructure projects like the Isthmus of Tehuantepec trade corridor.

However, the benefits of these developments may not be evenly distributed, with wealthier segments and regions likely to gain the most.

Addressing infrastructure challenges and ensuring inclusive growth will be crucial for maximizing the potential of these opportunities and fostering long-term economic stability and equity. The support from Morena and the strategic direction they provide will play a significant role in navigating these complexities and actualizing Mexico’s economic potential.
