But the devil is in the details. The mining rights should run for a limited period of time. And like Norway Did with its oil resources, Mexico needs to partner with Ganfeng in an advantageous way that will allow Mexico to take over and produce its own lithium mining in the future.

Why would Mexico legally agree with a foreign company in the first place if that resource was “sovereign”. The answer is because the country does not have the technical know how to accomplish on its own. Going forward, why would any country or foreign corporation do business with Mexico if they decide to change the rules after an agreement is in place?

The nationalization of companies and resources in the past led to a disaster as the country couldn’t figure out how to do efficiently operate (see Pemex and CFE). Which then lead to over a 1,000 companies being denationalized a couple decades ago.

Mexico has an inherent sovereign right to cancel contracts with foreign entities in its own best interest. If Mexico wants to resolve the situation with an agreement that’s fine but nothing challenges there sovereign right to their own minerals and resources.
